How Helpful is Colour-Cueing of PIN Entry?

چکیده
21st Century citizens are faced with the need to remember numbers of PINs (Personal Identification Numbers) in order to do their daily business, and they often have difficulties due to human memory limitations. One way of helping them could be by providing cues during the PIN entry process. The provision of cues that would only be helpful to the PIN owner is challenging because the cue should only make sense to the legitimate user, and not to a random observer. In this paper we report on an empirical study where we added colour to the PINpad to provide an implicit memory cue to PINpad users. We compared the impact of colour PINpads as opposed to grey ones. As expected, the ability to recall a PIN deteriorated significantly over time irrespective of the type of PINpad used. However, there was ultimately no improvement in the ability to recall PINs when using

A configural dominant account of contextual cueing: Configural cues are stronger than colour cues.
Previous work has shown that reaction times to find a target in displays that have been repeated are faster than those for displays that have never been seen before. This learning effect, termed "contextual cueing" (CC), has been shown using contexts such as the configuration of the distractors in the display and the background colour. However, it is not clear how these two contexts interact to...
متن کاملSelective attention modulates implicit learning.
The effect of selective attention on implicit learning was tested in four experiments using the "contextual cueing" paradigm (Chun & Jiang, 1998, 1999). Observers performed visual search through items presented in an attended colour (e.g., red) and an ignored colour (e.g., green). When the spatial configuration of items in the attended colour was invariant and was consistently paired with a tar...
متن کاملLimitations of perceptual segmentation on contextual cueing in visual search
In visual search, detection of a target in a repeated layout is faster than search within a novel arrangement, demonstrating that contextual invariances can implicitly guide attention to the target location (‘‘contextual cueing’’; Chun & Jiang, 1998). Here, we investigated how display segmentation processes influence contextual cueing. Seven experiments showed that grouping by colour and by siz...
متن کاملThe role of cueing in attentional capture
In the present study, participants searched for an odd-man-out target within the shape dimension (either a diamond or a circle) while a colour distractor singleton could be present. In some conditions, the identity of the target singleton for the upcoming trial was cued in advance by either a word cue (e.g., a word saying ‘‘diamond’’) or a symbolic cue (e.g., a cue showing the shape of a diamon...
متن کاملControl of multiple - colour
To study whether top-down attentional control processes can be set simultaneously for different visual features, we employed a spatial cueing procedure to measure behavioural and electrophysiological markers of task-set contingent attentional capture during search for one or two possible colour-defined targets (One Colour and Two Colour tasks). Search arrays were preceded by spatially non-predi...
